Welcome to the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. We are one of the oldest departments of IIT Madras, established in the same year as the Institute in 1959. In the first few decades of its existence, then known as the Department of Metallurgy, the focus was more on industrial metallurgy. However, over the past few decades, the department changed to the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering to adapt to the transformations and expectations woarldwide in diverse materials science and engineering areaas. Several faculty members of the department in recent times have taken the lead in establishing prospective centres of excellence in the areas of advanced/correlative microscopy, materials and manufacturing for futuristic mobility that includes additive manufacturing, ceramic technologies and surface engineering. .

Prof. NV Ravi Kumar has been elected "Honorary Fellow of the European Ceramic Society". It will be recognised during the XIX th Conference of the European Ceramic Society that will take place from August 31 to September 4, 2025 at the International Congress Center in Dresden in Germany.
Prof. NV Ravikumar have been awarded the "Late Padmashree D.r .T N. Sharma Memorial Award for the year 2024" by the Indian Ceramic Society, Western U.P (Khurja) chapter. The award was handed over during the Centenary celebrations of the Department of Ceramic Engineering, IIT BHU which was accompanied by the International Conference on Frontier in Ceramic Materials (ICFCM 2024) from 16th - 18th December 2024 in IIT BHU.
Prof. Ravi Kumar N V has been inducted as a member of the International Advisory Board of the European Ceramic Society and he will be attending the first meeting on the 1st of Sept 2025 in Dresden, Germany, The invitation was extended to him by Prof. Pavol Sajgalik, former president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.
We are happy to inform you that Prof. Sreeram Kalpathy has been selected for the teachers day award from Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. The award will be given on the teachers day function to be held on 8th September at terrace hall at 4 PM Hearty congratulations Prof. Sreeram for this well deserved recognition and wish you many more laurels.
Prof. Kamaraj M has been awarded as Winner in the Applied Semiconductor Collaboration in Engineering and Technology (ASCENT) for their proposal titled: "Cold spray deposition of metal on ceramics" and "Diamond-like-carbon coating on Graphite".

We are pleased to inform you that Prof. N V Ravi Kumar has been appointed as "ACADEMICIAN" of the WORLD ACADEMY OF CERAMICS of the class "Science" during the recently held 21st election and approved by the Academy Council meeting held on September 23, 2025. The appointment will be officially awarded during the Inaugural Session of CIMTEC 2026 in Perugia, Italy, June 15-25, 2026. This is a prestigious appointment to the academy and awarded to those who have made an international noteworthy contribution to the advancement of ceramics.
Prof. Ravi Kumar has been invited to be on the Editorial Board of Advances in Applied Ceramics: Structural, Functional and Bioceramics. "Advances in Applied Ceramics: Structural, Functional and Bioceramics provides international coverage of high-quality research on functional ceramics, engineering ceramics and bioceramics. The journal aims to enhance fundamental understanding and applied knowledge of the relationship between processing, microstructure and properties of ceramics and ceramic composites." The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Congratulates Prof. Ravi Kumar for this recognition and wishes him more laurels.

We are happy to share that an Indian patent titled "THIN-FILM HEATER PRINTED ON QUARTZ SUBSTRATE USING SILVER NANOPARTICLE INK" has been granted for a collaborative work between Prof. Parasuraman Swaminathan’s research group and the research group of Prof. Sumathi (EE, IIT Roorkee). Dr. Nikhila Patil (former PhD student from IIT Roorkee) and Sowmmya V (former MTech student from our department) worked on this patent. We are happy to share that Dr. K Shivaraj Kumar, Post-doctoral researcher of our department mentored by Dr. Sreeram K Kalpathy, Prof. Tiju Thomas, and Dr. R Ratheesh (SM Visiting Chair Professor, MME, IITM) have won the best oral presentation award for the talk “A sustainable zero-discharge process for debromination and resource recovery from end-of-life printed circuit boards” in the SustainX 2026 Conference on Circularity in Energy, Earth and Environment held during 23rd- 25th July, at IC&SR, IIT Madras. Hearty congratulations to Dr. K Shivaraj Kumar and his mentors.
