The Department of Metallurgical Engineering was established in 1959. President of India in his capacity as the Visitor of IIT Madras approved the change of name of the Department of Metallurgical Engineering as Department of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering with effect from 12th March 2003. The Department offers B.Tech., Dual Degree, M.Tech., M.S. and Ph.D. programmes. Following are major areas of teaching, research and consultancy activities of the Department.
The department has 28 faculty on roll, viz., 15 professors, 4 associate professors and 9 assistant professors. In addition, 2 emeritus professors and 1 distinguished visiting faculty are also hosted by the department.

To become a pioneering department in the country for teaching, research and consultancy in emerging areas of materials science and engineering while consolidating the department's strength in traditional areas of metallurgical engineering.
